Thanks for the comment. My interpretation of events, is that there is much in common between ANTIFA and Fascism and Nazism. In my observation 3 defining themes of dangerous ideologies are:

  1. The belief that the world is divided into good and evil, with the ideologues fervently believing that they are on the side of “good”. Nazis and fascists both believed they represented good and that killing the enemy was ridding the world of evil. ANTIFA celebrated a man being shot the other day under the banner that he deserved it because he was a fascist (clear evidence of the good-evil dichotomy).
  2. Believing that their idea is unequivocally true, and that disagreement with their assumptions is proof that those assumptions are true. ANTIFA believe that only fascists would criticise them and take criticism of their point of view of proof of their critics fascism, rather than wonder whether their world view is incorrect. BLM protestors (for the most part) likewise believe that don’t care about black lives would criticise their ideas, or require them to provide data for their contentions.
  3. The belief that the world is cursed by simple problems with simple solutions, prevented from being by “evil” people. Nazis — problems are caused by a Jewish conspiracy: if we kill the jews we will end the problems. BLM — disparities in outcome are proof of systemic racism: if we smash racist systems, we will end disparities. ANTIFA — suffering is caused by Capitalism and Fascists. Smash capitalism and rid the world of fascists, and we will enter utopia.

I am not a fan of Trump, but he has consistently:

  1. Told people to respect the law and offered to send in federal troops to restore it in places where rioting has happened.
  2. Condemned violence
  3. Repeatedly spoken of America in terms of its core, uniting values, rather than cast it as a zero sum game between tribal groups

In my view, the rise of totalitarian movements like ANTIFA, who see the world as a war between good and evil, are far more like the 20th century Fascists and Nazis, than anyone else. Right now, the saving grace is that such behaviour is not sanctioned directly by the government, although it’s rather terrifying to see some mayors in some cities show sympathies with such fascistic behaviour. If a government came in that DID believe this was a way to behave, and used ANTIFA like an extra-judicial police force, then we would be well on the road to a dangerous end point.

That’s my interpretation, for what it’s worth, and I know it rubs some people up the wrong way. Try as I may, though, I can’t seem to join the dots to see it in line with what the protestors would want.
